What’s Happening in Señora Davila’s K-4 Spanish classes?

In the month of October, Señora Davila’s K-2 Spanish classes will be learning about colors. They will memorize color words such as; azul, rojo, amarillo, verde, morado, anaranjado, café, negro, blanco and rosado. Students will learn and memorize these words by participating in various fun and engaging activities including; Let’s Go Fishing, The Flyswatter game, Bean-bag Color Toss, Color Find Races, etc.
Students will also have a chance to show what they know by completing various worksheets. The books that I will be reading to the class include; Mis Primeros Colores by Isidro Sánchez and Horacio Elena, Crayola, Libro de Los Colores del Arco Iris by Salina Yoon, and Mis Colores by Rebecca Emberley.

Also, in the month of October, Señora Davila’s 3rd and 4th graders will be learning about color and size in Spanish. They will be reviewing colors and will be learning to describe things by size as well. The vocabulary for size that will be learned includes the words, grande, pequeño, largo, corto, alto, and bajo. Students will recognize that all things have certain properties. Color and size are properties of objects, and therefore, they can use color words and size to describe various objects. Students will acquire new vocabulary by engaging in fun and interesting activities and games. They will also have a chance to show what they know by completing engaging worksheets. Third and fourth grade students will also begin to read leveled books from National Geographic in Spanish. The first book that they will read in small groups is called, Perros Diferentes by Jane Donnelly. By reading this book, students will have a chance to practice the vocabulary learned about size to describe “Different Dogs.” Then students will have a chance to draw and write about a dog in Spanish.

¿Qué esta pasando?

5th Grade through 7th Grade

Students will talk about what they and others need for school. They will role-play a situation in which they go to "La librería" to buy school supplies. They will also play games such as memory, ti tac toe, jeopardy, charades, adivinando, among others, to review the vocabulary.

5th Grade
Students will identify and use Maya numbers to solve math problems. Also, they will be able to represent their phone numbers in Maya using clay. Students will watch a video in which they will have the opportunity to appreciate interesting aspects about the Mayan culture and its traditions.

6th and 7th
Students will talk about the contents of their rooms and will talk about what they have or need in their rooms. Students will draw a picture of their rooms or a room they would want to have. They will have to name each object in their rooms and will plan a small presentation of their rooms for the rest of the class.

8th Grade

Students will be describing the contents of a room and with a partner. They will plan and role-play a phone conversation in which they have to rent a room in a beach hotel in Latin America.

Actions, actions, actions!
Students will be studying action verbs to talk about what they and others like, need, and want to do. They will create a poster about their preferences and chores they have to do at home and will present it to the class. Then, using their writing skills, students will write a small paragraph about a typical day in their lives including things they like, need and have to do. Also, they will interview a classmate about what s/he likes or needs to do during a typical day, and they will report their findings in written form.
