Mini-Courses
Enrichment 2008 – 2009
We at Franklin Elementary School are excited
about the continuation of the school-wide enrichment program. The program
provides enrichment activities to enhance existing curriculum. Our goal is to
provide opportunities to those students who demonstrate an exceptional capacity
for learning.
The program is divided between the elementary
and middle school levels. All K-4 students participate in enrichment activities
brought to the classroom on a bi-monthly basis. Activities are coordinated with
homeroom teachers to enhance current topics covered in a variety of subjects.
Qualifying 5th – 8th grade students are invited
to join several enrichment projects throughout the year. These projects span a
range of topics and interests, and present opportunities for students to
further enhance their growth. While I coordinate and supervise all projects,
the program’s success will rely on the effort, motivation, and skill of the
students involved.
For more specific information about qualifying
for the course and about the specific course being offered this fall, please
see the pages below. Also, any parent who possesses a specific skill or
knowledge and would like to present an activity within the program is
encouraged to contact me at ssandor44@yahoo.com or call the school at (973) 827
– 9775 ext. 440.
I am looking forward to working with the
students of Franklin this year, and continuing the tradition of excellence at
Franklin Borough School through the generation of new ideas and experiences
through this program.
Sincerely,
Steve Sandor

F.A.Q. for Mini-Courses: Enrichment for 5th
to 8th

Q: What is a Mini-Course?
A: A Mini-Course is a class where students are
expected to think “outside the box” as they engage in creative and challenging
activities.
Q: What
kind of classes are they?
A: The classes are all different. They are
designed to be about specific, interesting and fun topics.
Q: How often does the class meet?
A: The class meets once every week for 2 periods
(80 minutes).
Q: How long does a Mini-Course last?
A: Most courses run 8 weeks. Although some may
be as short as 4 weeks (You Are What You Eat), others may run most of the year
(Film Making/Screen Play Writing/Film Acting).
Q: Who can apply to take a Mini-Course?
A: Any 5th to 8th grade student who has at least
a “B” average can apply to take a Mini-Course.
Q: How can I apply?
A: Pick up an application form in Mr. Sandor’s
room (104).
Q: What is needed for the application?
A:
1) The
student must first have at least a “B” average.
2) The
student must get the permission of both teachers whose class he/she will be
missing.
3) The
student must have his/her parent/guardian’s permission.
4) The
student must complete a letter of intent describing why he/she wants to take
they class and why he/she should be chosen.
Q: How are students chosen for the Mini-Courses?
A: Students are chosen based on the quality of
their letter, their interest level in the course, and an evaluation of the
current (and past) academic record.
Q: How many students are accepted in each class?
A: For most Mini-Courses about 10 students will
be chosen. This number may be flexible depending on the project and the
resources available.
Q: What if I am not accepted into a particular
Mini-Course?
A: If a student is not accepted into a course,
he/she may ask to apply for another course or apply again for the next session.
Q: What if I am accepted but I have to stop
taking the class because of my grades or behavior?
A: Students who have to leave the class because
of academic or behavioral issues will be suspended from applying for another
class for at least 1 full session or until the matter has been resolved to the
satisfaction of the teacher, parent/guardian, and the administration.
Q: What are the Mini-Courses being offered in
the first session (Fall1)?
A: Please see course posted on Mr. Sandor’s
bulletin board by the green doors on the main floor (just past the library).
Q: When are the sessions scheduled to begin and
end?
A: See the schedule at the end of each course description.
