Rebel 2 is a student led after-school group that
helps students gain knowledge about the effects
of smoking. Rebel 2 stands for reaching
everyone by exposing lies. The lies come
from the Big Tobacco industry. One out of
three people start smoking will die prematurely
as a result. This is the kind of
information the Big Tobacco companies won't tell
you. But REBEL 2 will teach students that:
-
Tobacco
use kills more than 400,000 Americans each
year - more than alcohol, cocaine, crack,
heroine, suicide, car accidents and AIDS
combined.
-
Each day
roughly 4,000 kids under the age 18 try
smoking for the first time, and more than
2,000 kids become new regular, daily
smokers.
-
Adult
male smokers lose an average of 13 years of
life.
-
Adult
female smokers lose an average of 15 years
of life.
-
Every
puff of a cigarette has more than 4,000
different chemicals, including ammonia (a
powerful toilet cleaner), arsenic (rat
poison), cyanide (preservative for dead
animals), carbon monoxide (poisonous gas),
and toluene (poisonous solvent).
Disgusting but true!
These are
just a few facts about the dangers of smoking.
Franklin Elementary School Rebel 2 students
present these facts to fellow students and staff
by using PowerPoint presentations, displays,
letter writing and interactive class
presentations. Students in 6th, 7th and
8th grade can participate. We meet twice a
month after school in the health room.
