MUSIC K-4
CATCH THE BEAT
KINDERGARTEN
The kindergarteners continue to explore the use
of their singing voices. This month they will
gain confidence by singing solos in many
seasonal songs such as "Turkey and Stuffing" and
"Shoo Turkey." The students will also enjoy
acting as turkeys and farmers in the "Turkey
Wobble Song." They will continue to work on
keeping a steady beat with the songs "Cobbler,
Cobbler" and "Johnny One Hammer."
FIRST GRADE
The first graders will be starting a unit on The
Nutcracker by Peter Tchaikovsky. They will begin
by reading the story and discussing what a
ballet is. The students will then explore many
of the movements from Tchaikovsky’s ballet.
Through the use of listening maps, movement, and
instruments, they will become familiar with this
very famous piece of music. They will also learn
about such musical elements as ABA form, repeat
signs, and codas.
SECOND GRADE
The second graders are currently visiting
Vienna, Austria. They are creating dances in
Rondo form (ABACADA) to perform along with "The
Viennese Musical Clocks" by Zoltan Kodaly. They
will also learn a song in German called "Ach, du
Leiber Augustine" which is a famous Austrian
folk song.
THIRD GRADE
The third graders are currently testing for
their yellow belts in recorder! They will then
begin learning songs with the new note “C” for
orange belt. The students have enjoyed working
on a very touching and emotional song called
"Welcome Home" which is in honor of Veteran’s
Day. Through this song the children have
experienced just how powerful music can be.
FOURTH GRADE
Lines are memorized, songs are being sung, and
scenery is being created as the entire 4th grade
prepares for the holiday musical “Santa’s Stuck
in the Fifties.” The show will be presented on
Friday, December 5th at 1:15 p.m. Be sure to
mark your calendar; you don’t want to miss this
show!
BEGINNING BAND
All of our young band members are working on
their first six notes. They should be practicing
pages 7 and 8 of the lesson book. Some of the
groups are already practicing pages 9 and 10!
Please check the practice record inside the
front cover for the weekly assignment. Remember
your child needs to practice at least three
times each week!

WEBSITE FOR NOVEMBER 2008
The first special area cycle has ended. It was a
very productive time with all the classes
accomplishing much. Fifth graders became quite
good at guitar. They wrote many good songs as
well. Check the end of the website to see
examples. They made up dances to “Monster Mash”
which was performed for one of Mrs. Cervino’s
music classes.
Sixth graders gained great skills at percussion.
They became quite good at improvising rhythms
and wrote a variety of music. See examples of
some of their “raps” at the end of this website.
Seventh graders performed a show about bullying
for a younger grade class. They did a wonderful
job not only acting but also interacting with
the younger students. They gained much knowledge
about theater in this cycle. Our last
discussion, which was a critique of them and of
the show, demonstrated an understanding, which
was very impressive. They have all gained
confidence in themselves and their abilities.
Eighth graders accomplished much. They sharpened
their guitar skills, created a class radio
station, and used the Apple computers to create
garage band music. Each group of three wrote a
piece of music on computer with the assistance
of Mr. Sandor. As a result of this experience,
any student who learned this program is eligible
to take an enrichment course to continue
composing music. Finally, the class elected to
organize African Folktales into a mini show. It
was very successful.
This year, the County Honors Band will meet at
our school. Evening rehearsal dates are: October
30, November 4, November 13, and November 18.
These rehearsals run from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. I am
so proud of the sixteen students from our school
who are participating. The concert will be held
at our school November 20.
We are busily preparing for our own winter
concert, which will be held in December. The
theme is “snow.” Students need to be able to
play at least 4 of the 8 pieces of music we will
perform. This will happen if they attend all
lessons and practice at home. There will be a
few after-school rehearsals as well as we draw
closer to the concert. A notice will go home
with the dates. It is important to remind
everyone that in order to play in band, a
student needs to pass all subjects. Progress
reports go home in early December. If a student
is not passing at this time, he or she will not
be able to play with us. I hope this does not
happen to anybody!
I appreciate how hard many of our students have
been working, whether it is by practicing their
instruments or creating music in class. I look
forward to a new wonderful cycle of students!
Check out two examples of student work!
Examples of a Song written by 5th Graders (tune
of Santa Claus is Coming to Town)
THE PIZZA MAN IS COMING TO TOWN
You better get your money, you better hold it
tight
Even if you have to wait one night
The Pizza man is coming to town.
He’s flying through the air in his big pizza
chair
Everyone wants a delicious slice
Don’t forget your soda with ice.
Our stomachs are a-rumbling, we really need to
eat
We think we see it coming, we really need a
treat!
It’s time to get your money, it’s time to hold
it tight
We don’t have to wait another night
The Pizza man is coming to town
Here is an excerpt of a rap written by some 6th
graders. This was performed with wonderful sound
effects!
IS IT REAL?
Dark circles in the sky
Zooming witches up so high.
Walking through an old creaky house
I feel a light tug on my blouse.
I turn around and what do I see?
I don’t see a thing, but something’s following
me.
I hear a whisper in my head,
Is it real? I’m filled with dread.
